Talk on the Symbolism of Gara Embroidery

By Perveez Aggarwal

Last Friday June 26, 2009, the PZAS invited Mrs. Perveez Aggarwal to give us a talk on the “Symbolism of Gara Embroidery”.

In her talk Mrs. Aggarwal described how she started and evolved her entrepreneurial venture into gara embroidery.  This whole project started out as an act of goodwill towards some craftsmen with embroidery skills who were unemployed and has now mushroomed into a successful and thriving business. “My Beautiful Embroideries” creates shawls, jackets, kurtis and sarees with traditional Parsi Gara embroidery customized to fit every purchasers style and budget.

It was an educational evening seeing “our” traditional gara embroidery so lovingly displayed and described. Mrs. Aggarwal helped us get a much better understanding of all the symbols embroidered upon the Gara and how they came into existence. She also answered our queries regarding Gara care with honesty and aplomb. You can visit www.mybeautifulembroideries.com to see more of Mrs. Aggarwal’s works of art.

This event was held at the Makena Condominium function room and was topped off by some delicious chicken or vegetarian biryani, papad and ice cream.
