Navroze and Khordad Saal Celebrations

Over 180 Zarathushtis met for lunch at the Tanglin Club on the 23rd of August, 2009 to celebrate Shehanshahi Pateti, Navroze (1378 y.z.) and Khordad Saal. Everyone was decked in their finest attire and in high spirits. The event started off with a call for prayers led by Mrs. Behroze Setna. This was followed by a speech by PZAS President, Mr. Russi Ghadiali, in which he informed the attendees of the community’s participation in past as well as upcoming events.

New members and their families were introduced to the community. They are Seema and Cyrus Cama, Sherali and Kurush Contractor, Jasmine and Rajiv Jain, Parizad and Ambrish Sukhani.

New additions to Zarathushti families were also welcomed with traditional ang paos. These precious little ones are Rayanna Jamaji, Hanosh Kolah, Rae Doctor and Fraron Malhotra. To note there were a record number of non-member guests who attended the event.

Of course no event is complete without our bhonu, which was sumptuously laid out and consisted of a deliciously varied spread of salads, and an assortment of non-vegetarian and vegetarian dishes including some of my favourites like chicken makhani, mutton rogan josh, and prawns masala. The dessert selection was also extensive and included gulab jamuns, ras malai, oreo cheese cake, and tiramisu just to name a few.

Bingo or Housie was played at the end and Jaldi 5, each completed line and 5 full houses were awarded. The children had fun dancing to the music and collecting candy that was handed out to them.

So once more it was a great way to bring in the Shehanshahi New Year with “malwanoo, jamwanoo and ghanu maja karwanoo”.
